Branch Banner Workshop

We all had an enjoyable Open Day starting to create a Banner to represent our
branch.  This could be used for exhibitions and displays of our work wherever that may be - from Gallery to Table top. An identity at last showing who we are.

Choose a Letter

Fabric for the banner

We were encouraged to choose a letter and given two contrasting tones of fabric to begin with. One for the letter and one for the background.

S for Stitches

Making a start
Throughout the day 14 members and visitors participated in some way. This shows some of our members stitching their letters with matching tones of threads and embellishments.

Begin stitching
Here is an example of our first letter M - already drawn and designed, cut out, stuck and outlined with couching techniques. Simple but effective.

M for Malmesbury
Near the end
A really good start - we hope to continue to have fun with some creative stitches and
embellishments before eventually making up the banner.

Letters and Kits
We made up kits for those who could't come but still would like to join in.  Look forward to seeing everyones progress over the next few months.

drawing through stitch

Thank you to everyone who came to the talk I gave last night at Little Somerford Village Hall.  We had a good turn and welcomed a couple of new visitors/members.

Our talks often have an unexpected twist and tonight's surprise was the opportunity to make a sketchbook and do a little drawing.  I showed the group how to make a simple sketchbook from an A4 sheet of paper and we worked with pencil, Derwent Artbars and Inktense blocks.

What was interesting is what is always interesting - everyone drew something different, differently.

Here we are, at the beginning....just setting up the table, books and materials.

I'd prepared quick Powerpoint and we had a discussion about the similarities/differences between stitch and drawing and the judgements that are still made between art/craft.

We meet in Little Somerford Village Hall - a lovely, traditional community space where, still, people come to congregate and enjoy each other's company.

I hope that everyone enjoyed the drawing activity.  I hope to run a few workshop days in the near future.

Our next Embroiderers' Guild workshop is Burning Issues II with Margaret Beal on Saturday 16th March.

Tuesday's talk

Our secretary, Janice Botterill, will be presenting 'Drawing through Stitch' at 7.30pm in Little Somerford Village Hall on Tuesday 19th February.

There will be a short talk about the connections between drawing and stitching followed by a mini-workshop.

All welcome.  Members free, visitors £5.
